Non-lethal Flashlight - LED Incapacitator

Here is an interesting device brought to us by Homeland security.... The Non-lethal Flashlight - LED Incapacitator . The device - using light emitting-diode technology - produces such a dazzling display of blue, green and red lights that those who find themselves in front of its strobe can't see, may develop a headache or even become physically ill.

Funded with $850,000 in DHS grants, the device could become an essential piece of equipment for police officers, border control agents and security officers, its Torrance developers say.

The device also could be used for crowd control, or on airline flights to subdue unruly passengers or even terrorists.

Fueled by rechargeable batteries, the flash is so strong it causes a person to immediately close his or her eyes. Lieberman said it creates a blinding effect that is much more severe than the blue spots that result when someone pops a flashbulb in your face.

Founded in 1998, Intelligent Optical Systems Inc. (IOS) is a high-tech firm that uses optical science to create security devices, medical equipment and monitors that detect hydrogen leaks in rocket engines. IOS is a Torrance California research and development business that invented the device.
