Port clerks reach tentative agreement on contract

Local 63 of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union, the union for clerks who handle all the paperwork for ships coming to and leaving the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, reached a tentative agreement today on a new contract with 17 of the world's shipping lines and terminal operators, sources close to the talks said.

Details of the agreement were not immediately available, and union leaders and representatives for the companies were still huddled at a Long Beach conference center. Full details are expected this afternoon.

The deal, if ratified by union members, would avert a strike that could have shut down the nation's two busiest container ports. Because the two ports move more than 40% of the nation's container cargo, a strike might have led to federal intervention for the third time in 36 years to bring a strike to an end.

As they like to say in business, it's a win-win for everybody involved. Glad the clerks didn't have to strike. You didn't hear about it in the papers, but I could tell there has been a work slow down at the port for a few weeks. The trucks were backed up to the 47 Freeway. I had trouble getting out of my workplace.

...Today was smooth sailing for all trucks. It showed me that the contract was settled. Personally, I owe ILWU a debt of gratitude. I don't want to reveal too much here. They are honorable union members who showed me what solidarity means. Unions on average are weak and easily broken. Most union leaders are lazy and sell out their members. That cannot be said for ILWU.

ILWU are our neighbors, family and friends. I do not understand why they don't get more support from the community. Why support the CEO's who live on the hill? I have a theory it is because Americanism is mostly about individualism. We believe we all should succeed on our own merits and hard work. I feel that too. Unfortunately, the big fat corporate CEO's have all the advantages and unions are needed. I wish ILWU luck in their future struggles. I envy them also ...since police and fire unions are prohibited from striking.

LA County Coroner tour

Looking for an unusual birthday gift? The LA County coroner has an excellent gift shop website. I have a few t-shirts from this place. It is also an interesting place to visit. The address is 1104 North Mission Road, downtown LA.

I also like to check out the television series on Court TV called North Mission Road. Each episode follows the highly trained professionals of the L.A. County Coroner Department as they use the latest in forensic medicine and investigative techniques to solve a variety of challenging mysteries. Awesome show! Check out the show on Friday, July 20 @ 10:30 PM

San Diego Traffic Problems

San Diego is definitely one of the best places to visit in the USA. I've always enjoyed a trip to San Diego. The weather is even better than LA. There is more of a party atmosphere in the air. It is a fun place.... which may explain why the traffic in San Diego is WORSE than LA. The drive from LA to San Diego has always had problems especially on holiday weekends. Now, I'd say the problems are just about any given day. It easily can take 90 minutes to get to Sea World from Carlsbad. ... Then if you think the I-15 may be better.... forget about it. Those in LA who think we have the worst traffic in the USA... I'd have to say head down to San Diego to see how things could be worse. The light rail in San Diego is excellent. Next time I'll take Amtrak.

Current Events and some political jokes

"Here in Los Angeles, it turns out our Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was having a long time affair with a Telemundo reporter -- the reporter who covered him for the news. And typical of a politician he didn't actually admit it, he said he was illegally south of her border." --Jay Leno

"Senator Ted Kennedy spent yesterday reporting for jury duty, but was dismissed because of a conflict of interest. Turns out all 15 trials that day involved other Kennedys." --Jay Leno

"The pope announced that the Catholic Church provides the only true path to salvation and that other Christian groups are either defective or not true churches. Yeah, the pope finished by saying that 'God loves everyone, but he loves me more.'" --Conan O'Brien

It was so hot, the mayor of Los Angeles found out what his mistress would do for a Klondike Bar. ... That's the big story in Los Angeles. It seems our mayor is getting a divorce and is dating a local TV news anchor. To which Rudy Giuliani said, 'Hey, when I was mayor that was a slow week.'" --Jay Leno

[On the new Seven Wonders of the World]: "After seeing the list, President Bush asked, 'Hey, what about Space Mountain?'" --Conan O'Brien

"Yesterday on CNN, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa accidentally called Hillary Clinton Senator Kennedy. See, that's when you know you need to lose a few pounds before bikini season" --Jay Leno

Have a great day!

From the LA Business Journal...the former LA City CAO becomes LA County CEO. See the following website link for more info LA County has a new CEO. William Fujioka along with Hahn and Villaraigosa screwed LA city employees and their LA City Unions ... he took an early retirement and now gets a cushy job for $310,000. Isn't that just peachy? It's all about William. Screw the masses so one person can get theirs. Good luck LA County empoyees. You are screwed now.
